In 2023, UCLA highlighted that Black actors make up 14.8% and 16.2% of all theatrical and streaming roles, respectively. However, we’ve seen many success stories that have inspired multiple generations. Black people in the entertainment industry have seen great strides in advancement in the creative arts that have helped evolve our everyday reality. The Golden Globe Awards and Variety celebrated upcoming talent at an invite-only party presented by Adobe on Jan. 19 at the Adobe space on Main Street in Park City, Utah.

The Breakthrough Awards highlight the next generation of exceptional talents in front of the camera. This year’s recipients included Normani, the singer-turned-actress who stars in Sundance opener “Freaky Tales”; Dylan O’Brien, star of “Ponyboi”; Maddie Ziegler, “My Old Ass”; and Justice Smith, who toplines two Sundance entries, “I Saw the TV Glow” and “The American Society of Magical Negroes.”

Jane Schoenbrun received the Breakthrough Director Award presented by Adobe for A24’s “I Saw the TV Glow.” The acceptance speeches were emotional and often funny. Normani thanked her co-workers, saying working with vets like Pedro Pascal and Ben Mendelsohn was a “masterclass in acting … I showed up every day feeling valued and equaled throughout my entire experience.”

O’Brien praised his film’s costar, writer, and director, River Gallo, saying the award “means a lot because of the light it shines on this project. There hasn’t been anything like it… there’s never been a feature film starring an intersex performer as a lead intersex character.”

Schoenbrun continued that theme, saying, “I’m proud of trying to negotiate this weird tightrope of art and commerce as a trans person.” The filmmaker added, “…there aren’t many people like me, but (change is) inevitable.” Talking to classes of young people, “…all those moth***ers are trans. So they’re coming!”

Ziegler got emotional talking about her friendship since age 10 with costar Maisy Stella, when they used to dream about appearing in movies together. Smith discussed acting in his room as a child and requested that this award be added to his IMDb profile since the only thing there so far is a nomination for a Razzie Award. He ended sincerely, saying it was his first time at Sundance: “I rarely get awards, so I’m grateful.”

One or two of the honorees’ colleagues presented each award, including Jack Champion, Gallo & Victoria Pedretti, Brigette Lundy-Paine, Megan Park & Stella, and Austin Abrams. Ramin Setoodeh and Tim Gray opened the program, with Setoodeh pointing out that Sundance continued the Variety-Golden Globes alliance, awarding breakthrough acting awards at film festivals around the world, including Venice and Cannes.

Gray added, “The Golden Globes have a tradition of recognizing up-and-coming talent dating back to our first ceremony in 1944.” Heather Freeland, chief brand officer at Adobe, said the company “has been proud to support and celebrate independent and emerging filmmakers at Sundance” for 13 years, including its roles as presenting sponsor and official editing platform. “In a world where technology connects us in unprecedented ways, film remains a universal language that transcends cultural barriers,” she added. “Tonight, we come together not only to recognize the incredible talent showcased at Sundance but also to celebrate the profound importance of film on the world stage.”

Sundance runs from Jan. 18-28.

In Remembrance of Norman Lear – Happy 100th Birthday https://goldenglobes.com/articles/norman-lear-happy-100th-birthday/ Wed, 06 Dec 2023 01:41:00 +0000 http://goldenglobes.com:8000/articles/norman-lear-happy-100th-birthday/ As Hollywood continues to enjoy the current ‘Golden Age’ of television, let’s take time out to acknowledge Norman Lear, the man largely responsible for TV’s original Golden Age, as he turns 100-years-old on July 27!

The post In Remembrance of Norman Lear – Happy 100th Birthday appeared first on Golden Globes.

TV writer-director-producer Norman Lear died Dec. 6, at age 101. Here’s an article the Golden Globes ran last year, to celebrate his 100th birthday and his amazing accomplishments.

As Hollywood continues to enjoy the current ‘Golden Age’ of television, let’s take time out to acknowledge Norman Lear, the man largely responsible for TV’s original Golden Age, as he turns 100years-old on July 27!
At one point in the ‘70s, Lear had seven shows in the Top Ten ratings – All in the Family (1968-79), Good Times (1974-79), Maude (1972-78), The Jeffersons (1975-85), Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman (1976-77), Sanford and Son (1972-77) and One Day at a Time (1975-84). Over 120 million people were watching his content on a weekly basis and not only were his shows popular, but Lear also used the opportunity to push boundaries and give voice to underrepresented parts of society long before it was a popular cause taken on by the rest of Hollywood.

When Norman joined me on stage in 2017 as I moderated the “HFPA TV Game Changers panel” (alongside other great TV creators: David E. Kelley, J.J. Abrams, Ryan Murphy, Joey Soloway and Shonda Rhimes – all of whom openly gushed about him from the stage), the spritely then-nonagenarian initially tried to downplay those extraordinary achievements. “The fact of life is you work your ass off doing this and then the rest of the world tells you what you did,” he insisted. “I am not seeking to minimize it, but there’s nothing I can say that hasn’t been said about it all. Am I wrong?”
Probably the most famous of all his creations, All in the Family, was a groundbreaking and often controversial series that laid waste to the sitcom mold by tackling taboo issues like racism, gender roles and the war in Vietnam, while managing to still remain one of the funniest and most well-written shows in television history. Though Lear wore his liberal views on his sleeve, All in the Family was strangely also embraced by conservative America, which largely agreed with his creation’s curmudgeonly main character, who wanted a return to the ‘good old days’.

One we get talking, Lear eventually warms up to reflect on his brilliant career and the anecdotes spill out. There are moments in his life he instantly remembers as sharply as a teenager. They stood for something as far as the artist was concerned. But they also tell us more about who Norman Lear was by looking at what his work stands for.
Asked about how difficult it was to get some of his shows on air, Lear thoughtfully responds, “one anecdote tells it all. On the very first episode of All in the Family, we told a little plotline that it was Archie and Edith’s 25th Wedding Anniversary and it was a Sunday, and they were at church, so Mike and Gloria were making a surprise brunch for them and found themselves alone in the house which happened rarely. Mike induces her to go upstairs with him, closes the bedroom door and no sooner than they do that, the front door opens, and Archie and Edith walk in because he hated the sermon, and they left church early. They see balloons, they smell food cooking, they realize what’s going on and Mike and Gloria also heard the door, and they are rushing down the stairs while they are buttoning up,” he recounts.
“Archie has the first line, which was, ‘11:30 on a Sunday morning?’ and everyone laughed,” Lear adds, “but the network said the line had to come out because of the audience thinking about exactly what was going on up there and Archie’s words putting their mind to work, and they didn’t like that. I don’t want to sound brave,” he immediately continues back in the mode of downplaying his achievements, “but I already had a three-picture deal as a result of a film called Cold Turkey that I was saying no to in order to make All in the Family, so I was going to be all right anyway. I knew if I gave into what I thought was silly, it would ruin all the weeks or years to come of the show so I said no and told them if they took out the line when the show aired that night, I wouldn’t be there tomorrow morning. That night I got a call that they left the line in, but that’s how close we came to not having the show – and over nothing!”
On stage at that event, it was the current kind of TV’s Golden Age, Ryan Murphy, who reveals that Lear sought him out early in his career that includes Nip/Tuck, Glee, American Horror Story, American Crime Story, and The Normal Heart. “Now I feel a responsibility to find who is the next person who is different from the mainstream, and I try and bring those people and work with them on those shows and train them and talk to them as Norman did with me when I was first starting out. He was one of the first people that reached out to me and said, ‘keep being unusual, keep being different and that is how you change the world.’ It meant the world to me.”
Born on July 27, 1922, in New Haven, Connecticut, Lear was raised in a middle-class home and went to a local high school, where he landed a full scholarship to Emerson College after winning first prize in the American Legion Oratorical Contest for his take on what the U.S. Constitution meant to him. In 1942, he left college to join the U.S. Army Air Force as a radio operator and gunner aboard a B-17 Flying Fortress. After flying over 50 missions, he was discharged in 1945 and moved to New York City, where he attempted to establish himself in public relations. After struggling, he moved to Los Angeles with his first wife, Charlotte, and their firstborn, Ellen and immediately formed a comedy writing team with his cousin, Ed Simmons. A gutsy, blind telephone call to comedian Danny Thomas resulted in their first real entertainment job and the rest is history.
After years of writing and producing comedy-variety specials, he created his first TV show, The Deputy (1959-61), a half-hour Western starring Henry Fonda as a U.S. Marshal and he also launched his film career writing the film adaptation of Neil Simon’s Broadway hit Come Blow Your Horn, starring Frank Sinatra, and Divorce American Style (1967), starring Dick Van Dyke and Debbie Reynolds, which earned him an Oscar nomination.
After making his directorial debut with the hit film Cold Turkey, starring Dick Van Dyke, he acquired the rights to the British series Till Death Do Us Part (1965-75) in which Archie Bunker (Carroll O’Connor), a racist, anti-socialist working stiff clashes with his socialist son-in-law nicknamed Meathead (Rob Reiner), who lives in his house. After tweaking the characters for American audiences, All in the Family arrived with record-breaking ratings, numerous awards and a special place in TV history.
Having already won four Golden Globes for Best TV Series Comedy/Musical All in the Family, Norman Lear became only the third person to win the newly established Carol Burnett Golden Globe Award for Achievement in Television in 2019. The new centenarian is an indefatigable creative who shows no signs of slowing down. He arrived on the red carpet at the Golden Globes in 2018 on a motorized red scooter with Oscar-winning West Side Story star Rita Moreno to help promote the reboot of his series One Day at a Time, which Netflix commissioned with a new Latino cast including Moreno. “I’ve never done anything that I am prouder of than the Latino version of this show we did a long time ago,” Lear says with pride. “I am also working on another show I’ve wanted to do for 40 years about aging, so look out for it.”

If anyone can write a hit show on aging, our bet is on Norman Lear. Happy 100th Birthday Norman!

Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television to be Awarded for the First Time Ever

The Live Ceremony Will Take Place on Sunday, January 7, 2024

Awards Timetable, Rules and Categories HERE.

The Golden Globes® announced two new categories recognizing Cinematic and Box Office Achievement in Motion Pictures, and Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television. Winners will be announced live at the 81st Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, January 7, 2024.

The Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement will include nominees from among the year’s highest-earning and/or most-viewed films that have gained extensive global audience support and produced exceptional creative content. The Award for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television recognizes outstanding work by a comedic performer.

“The Golden Globes has a rich history of supporting and celebrating the work of comedians, and we’re thrilled to honor their brilliance alongside outstanding motion picture and television performances of the year,” said Helen Hoehne, Golden Globes President. “Additionally, we are proud to recognize the hard work and innovation that goes into making a film that is both a blockbuster and artistically exceptional.”

“The new Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award is more than just rewarding the year’s top-earning and most viewed motion pictures,” said Tim Gray, Golden Globes Executive Vice President. “These films have typically not been recognized among industry awards, but they should be.”

Cinematic and Box Office Achievement

The Cinematic and Box Office Achievement includes nominees from the year’s most acclaimed, highest-earning and/or most viewed films that have garnered extensive global audience support and attained cinematic excellence.

Eligibility:

● Motion pictures are eligible for the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award if they achieve a box office receipt total/gross of $150 million, of which $100 million must come from the U.S. domestic box office, and/or obtain commensurate digital streaming viewership recognized by trusted industry sources.

● Films that are released after November 22 may qualify based on projected box office performance and/or streaming views from recognized industry sources.

● Cinematic and Box Office Achievement contenders can also be considered for Best Motion Picture in their respective categories, i.e., Drama, Comedy or Musical, Animated or Non-English Language if they meet the eligibility requirements for each of those awards.

● Box office and streaming views will determine eligibility; once a film meets the box office-related qualifying criteria or streaming criteria, Golden Globes voters will determine the nominees and winner based on excellence.

● A total of 8 nominees will be named for this category.

Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television (also known as Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television)

This new category gives standups a dedicated award for an individual performance or as part of a comedy group/ensemble.

Eligibility:

● Traditional stand-up comedy performances of at least 30 minutes, other than roles in Television Series, Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Pictures Made for Television, are eligible for this award.

● Television includes works released by broadcast, basic and premium cable, streaming, and pay-per-view cable. To be eligible for Golden Globe awards, television programs must be released on a recognized media platform (individual social media accounts do not qualify).

● Only programs first aired (or made available for viewing on demand) in the United States during the qualifying calendar year are eligible.

● A total of 6 nominees will be named for this category.

The Golden Globe Awards timetable, rules and categories can be found HERE, and nominations are set to be announced on Monday, December 11, 2023. The submission website for motion picture and television entries will open on October 2, 2023.

I’m impressed with each person on the board – their experience, reputation, and their high standards.”

Solomon Oversaw Growth of Globes and Innovated Many of its Well-Known Features
The Golden Globes® announced the passing of long-time member Judy Solomon yesterday morning. The former six-term president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association was 91 years old.
“We are incredibly saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Judy Solomon. The loss is profound, but we take this opportunity to celebrate her incredible achievements in helping evolve the Golden Globes into the world-spanning award it is today,” said Helen Hoehne. “We are grateful for her support and leadership during her 67 years of membership with the HFPA.”
Born in Romania and raised in Israel, Solomon eventually moved to the United States where she started a family and built her career in journalism. She quickly became an accomplished entertainment feature writer for various publications in Israel and earned praise for her insightful and thought-provoking features.
Solomon joined the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in 1956 and swiftly became involved in many innovative changes to the Golden Globes that have left a permanent mark today, including the introduction of Dick Clark to the awards and the sealing of an agreement for his eponymous production company, Dick Clark Productions, to begin what would prove to be a long-term association producing the iconic award show.
She was also instrumental in the move of the awards from its long-time home at the Cocoanut Grove Club at the Ambassador Hotel to its new home at the International Ballroom at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
“Not only did Judy love the HFPA, but she also loved Hollywood,” added Hoehne. “She loved the people she met, the executives she collaborated with and the rich tapestry of films and television that audiences around the world enjoyed.”
During her tenure, she supported the work of foreign journalists in the United States and expanded the Association’s philanthropic support of the arts, education, film restoration and journalism using proceeds from the awards show.
A deeply private person, Solomon avoided industry tributes and efforts to memorialize and recognize her accomplishments as a pioneering female leader in the entertainment industry at a time where women were not visible in key leadership roles, preferring instead to shine the spotlight on others.
She is survived by her daughters Donna Sloan, and Deborah Solomon, son-in-law Stephen Sloan and her granddaughter Ashley Sloan.
Funeral services will be announced by the family shortly.

From Cookie Monster to the Golden Gobes – no one can say that Edie Falco, who turns 60 today, hasn’t paid her dues. From monologues in front of her bathroom mirror to two iconic roles, countless immensely successful stage productions and that year when she swept the top three television awards all at once.
Little Edie always had an inkling that she would be an actress someday. Born in Brooklyn to an actress mother and a jazz drummer father, she was surrounded by art and creativity. She grew up on Long Island and attended and graduated from the prestigious Conservatory of Theatre Arts and Film. After a move to Manhattan, she supported herself with odd jobs, among them a party animator dressed in a Cookie Monster costume. There were little parts here and there in the 1980s and early 1990s, culminating with a supporting role in Woody Allen’s Bullets Over Broadway. But there were also long periods of rejections, as she recalled in an HFPA interview: “Years of waitressing, years of sadness, being convinced I’d made a terrible choice about my life. You get a play, and you think this is the beginning of it and then nothing happens for the next five years. All that same sad scary stuff but the through line has always been there’s nothing I enjoy as much as what I do.”
Her first recurring role was in Homicide: Life on the Street, a slew of others followed in several cop procedurals. Her perseverance paid off when, in 1999, she got cast as Carmela, the wife of New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano in the iconic series The Sopranos which ran for six seasons.
In the same year, 2000, she received the three top awards for it: the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, The Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Drama Series and the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series. She won her second Golden Globe three years later for the same role.
As a stage performer she excelled in “Sideman,” in “The Vagina Monologues,” and in revivals of “Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune” (which co-starred Stanley Tucci) and “‘Night Mother.” On TV, she found another iconic part in the title role of Nurse Jackie which earned her another four nominations.
She had a hard time believing her success at first as she told us: “I don’t know if I believed in my talent as much as I believed in my passion, so I just thought I don’t care if nobody’s watching, I’m doing this thing. If I have to sit in my apartment and do a monologue in the mirror, this is what I’m going to do. I was convinced at some point that was what my life was going to be and then people started paying me which was beyond my wildest dream and then it has gone from there and it’s been beyond thrilling.”
Falco went on to play a variety of parts, among them Leslie Abramson in the eight-part mini-series Law & Order True Crime. She currently has three upcoming projects, among them Avatar 3 where she will reprise the role of General Ardmore.
Says the mother of two adopted children who views motherhood as her favorite job of all: “The best part is I never wanted to be on the top. I never aimed for this. I just aimed to have people write words and then me act them out. I’ll continue to do this until my last days.”
